With six cars on grid and beautiful weather, yet another great weekend was lining up at Summit Point Motorsportspark. A slight chance of rain was forecasted, but no actual rain turned out to hit the track for the Spec3 runners. Another grouping with the Stinger racers meant Spec3 was one of the fastest cars on track mixing it up with lapped traffic towards the end of the races.

Saturday’s 25 minute race started with Anders Skandsen on pole, followed by Jon McAvoy and George Widas. McAvoy went on the outside in T1 and took the lead at the start. D’Abreu moved up one position and followed in third. Skandsen stayed with McAvoy as they both were gapping third place comfortably. Mid-race Skandsen made a pass on the outside of McAvoy as he went defensive for T1. Side by side they entered T3 with Skandsen on the inside, coming out ahead and taking the lead. The race finished under a red flag as some Miatas got together between T4 and T5. Luckily nobody got seriously hurt. Final standings was Skandsen, McAvoy, D’Abreu, Hilburger, Sparrow and Widas.

The next day we were to see McAvoy drop out and some impressive charges from the back. D’Abreu put his car on pole, followed by Skandsen and Sparrow in a very shortened qualifying. With thunderstorms threatening on the radar, tire choice was carefully considered. At the start Skandsen the only one starting with rain tires, a choice not paying off as the rain stayed away. Mark Hilburger charged from the back, starting fifth, getting up close to the leader D’Abreu challenging for the lead towards the end of the race. Robin Sparrow kept third with an impressive first podium for the rookie. D’Abreu held on to the lead and took another important victory in the championship, followed close by Hilburger.

With D’Abreu and McAvoy at the top of the championship standings, separated by 20 points and alive for the championship win with two more races to go. It is going to come down to what happens at VIR in October. Check under the NASA Spec3 tab for unofficial results, and on board video under the Video tab.

An unusual low number of Spec3 cars were ready to race for Hyperfest 2012. Only four cars were on grid for Saturday's feature race. Michael D'Abreu on pole, followed by Anders Skandsen, Jon McAvoy and Beno Rubin. Rubin experienced cooling problems and had to retire after two laps. Up front the battle continued as Skandsen got the lead for a few laps in the middle but loosing it going wide in T3 after D'Abreu put pressure on the inside. McAvoy stayed in third throughout the race, but was never far behind and setting fastest lap just a tenth behind the track record.

Sunday's race had McAvoy on pole next to D'Abreu on the front row, followed by Skandsen in third. The first laps saw McAvoy fall back to third, but later worked his way back up to the lead, which he held to the end, taking the win in front of D'Abreu and Skandsen in third.

Even with a small field at Hyperfest 2012, Spec3 again proved to have close racing. With the weather being perfect with sun and temperatures around 85 degrees, spectators and drivers could enjoy Spec3 action at Summit Point Motorsports Park with NASA Mid Atlantic Hyperfest 2012.

Skandsen taking the lead from McAvoy on the last lap coming from 5th.NASA's fast growing Spec3 series enjoyed a great season with the Mid-Atlantic region in 2011 with more racers than ever. Rookie Anders Skandsen won the regional championship followed closely by Michael D'Abreu and Jon McAvoy, respectively, in a season being decided by the last race. In 2012 after four races completed in the Mid-Atlantic region at VIR, yet another great season for Spec3 has started. With close to ten starting cars, new racers added to the grid at almost every event, great racing, and the top three in last year's championship each taking a win in 2012, the season is ramping up for another great one.

March Madness at VIR saw eight Spec3 cars and drivers both Saturday and Sunday. Throughout the weekend the weather varied between rain and sun, but still lots of great racing with multiple lead changes and close finishes. Saturday's race was red flagged on lap 2 due to incidents involving other classes, but got restarted instead of Sunday's qualifying and was a true sprint race of only 3 laps. Polesitter Jon McAvoy tok the win followed by Michael D'Abreu and Sean O'Connel. Sunday's race was especially tricky as it was raining up till the start of the race. Half the field was on wet tires and the other half on drys. So was the conditions on track, with a dry line that stopped and became wet on top of the uphill esses, then returning again on the front straight. Jason Franklin spun out on the first lap on top of the esses while the cars on drys struggled for grip. As the race went on the track dried up ending with Anders Skandsen taking the win from fifth on grid, closely followed by Jon McAvoy only two tenths behind and Michael D'Abreu, the first of the cars starting on wets.

Skandsen in T5.It was time for NASA Mid Atlantic’s first time to Summit Point for 2012. The weather yet again was threatening with some rain but temperatures were good and as long as the rain stayed away track records would be made. Six cars was signed up for Spec3 this weekend; McAvoy, D’Abreu, the two O’Connels, Skandsen and Hilburger. Hilburger showing for the first time, his beautifully vinyl wrapped car.

Saturday was a beautiful day with fast times. Skandsen qualified on pole followed by McAvoy and D’Abreu. Skandsen kept the lead at the start of the race and gapped the field setting fastest lap and track record while winning the race. Second place went to D’Abreu followed by McAvoy which battled back and forth throughout the entire race giving the spectators watching great entertainment. The race finished with Colin O’Connel in fourth followed by Sean O’Connel and Hilburger.

Qualifying on Sunday showed wet to damp condition from overnight rain. Several areas like the braking zone into T1 and T10, as well as most of T9 were tricky. Unfortunately Colin O’Connel could not slow his car into T1 and went straight off making a hard impact with the wall. Colin was airlifted to the hospital with back injuries but has since then had successful surgery and is now in recovery. We all wish Colin a speedy and well recovery!

With a somber feeling throughout the paddock and the Spec3 field the race started with D’Abreu on pole followed by McAvoy, Skandsen and Hilburger filling in the back. D’Abreu got a good start but was quickly involved with traffic ahead. Skandsen had to take evasive actions at the start and fell back to fourth as Hilburger capitalized. McAvoy managed to get by D’Abreu on the first lap and Skandsen regained third from Hilburger on braking into T5. The field was then spaced out by a couple of seconds between each car and that’s how it remained pretty much to the end with McAvoy taking the win, followed by D’Abreu, Skandsen and Hilburger.

This weekend showed yet an improvement in Spec3 speed around the track. The new track record of 1:26.882 is showing that the Spec3 cars are being developed along with the drivers in them. This development has yet to flatten out and we are most likely to keep seeing the track records broken. Over the last six races there have been three different winners in the Mid-Atlantic Spec3 Regional Championship. With an expected strong showing at Hyperfest 2012 at Summit Point in June, yet another winner could be appearing.

The last race weekend of 2011 is over after a spectacular weekend at VIR. Absolutely amazing weather and a great track. Qualified 4th, but knew there was more speed in both car and driver especially. However, an embarrassing mistake during the start of the first race dropped us far back in the field. Worked back up to fourth and stayed there for the remainder of the race. Race number 2 went a lot better! Got a good start and had third after the first lap but went wide in turn 1 and lost third. The pace was good and the car felt great so I started pushing pretty hard, making it to P1 with a bit of a gap to number two. Kept that gap pretty much to the end and won the race. My best race, great fun, with a great result!

This also means I won the NASA Mid Atlantic Spec3 Championship 2011!! Something none of us would have dreamt of at the beginning of the year. We have been lucky, worked hard and tried to enjoy our first year in racing. It's been a blast, and there are lots of people to thank for supporting us. To make a great weekend and a great year even better, I was awarded the "Rookie of the year" award from NASA Mid Atlantic. It's a true honor to receive such an award.

We are the Champions! Wohoo! :)
